The Earth. The Vine. The Magic...

Welcome to Barbara Thomas Wines. We’re glad you’re here!

Come see us!

Barbara Thomas Wines will be pouring our 2005 and 2006 Vigna Giovanni Yamhill-Carlton District Pinot Noir at a benefit for Valley Catholic School in Beaverton, Oregon on Saturday, November 3rd, from 7-10 pm. This will mark the first public release of our 2006, which was bottled on September 12th at the Bergström Winery.

2007 Vintage

As I sit here this morning, gazing out at the beautiful ripe harvest moon and the glorious reds, golds, and burnt auburns of our late autumn wine country landscape, I am amazed at how quickly yet another growing season has gone by.

Vineyard life is measured by the vintage, and this was a challenging season for us. Like many Willamette Valley vineyards, we were pressured by powdery mildew in the vineyard early in the summer, and then by the continuing cool weather during the rest, which made it very difficult for the fruit to fully ripen. Those of you in this area who tried to grow tomatoes in your home gardens know just what I’m talking about. When we harvested our precious little remaining fruit on October 11th, and sent it off to brilliant winemaker Aron Hess at 12th and Maple to work his magic, it was with a huge sigh of relief, a feeling of completion for the 2007 vineyard year, and a look forward to 2008 and the hope for a better growing season. Our work in the vineyard to prepare for the next vintage starts now, with compost to spread, elemental teas to spray, and vines to prune after Winter Solstice on December 22nd.

Governor’s Carbon Neutral Challenge

Our Vigna Giovanni offerings for the 2007 will be in scant supply, but our commitment to our farming practices and our respect for Mother Nature (and her tricks) is as great as ever.

Because we are in a unique position to observe the effects of climate change on our planet, Barbara Thomas Wines/Vigna Giovanni has answered the call of Oregon’s Governor Kulongoski to reduce our carbon footprint and our personal contribution to the greenhouse gasses that are threatening us all. Read what the Oregon Economic Council and the fine folk at Stoel Rives, our attorneys, have to say about this challenge. And please stay tuned for more details of how we are meeting this challenge as we enter the construction phase of our new winery building, and for tips of what you, too, can do in your life to reduce your carbon footprint.

We invite you to have a look around the site and get to know us a little. Let us know what you think, we want to know!
