December, 2008 As I write this update, it is the first day of winter, the day after winter solstice, and what a beautiful winter wonderland we’re enjoying here at the vineyard! Chuck and I both remember the last time we had this much snow in our little corner of NW Oregon, way back in 1968 when we were both youngsters, but I keep thinking to myself that this weather is just so unreal! We have 3 feet of snow on the ground, more in drifts.
We’ve been snowed in for over a week. A neighbor who lives about a half mile down the road, a deputy sheriff as it happens, phoned me this morning to tell me he was driving into town to pick up provisions, and he was calling the neighbors to see if anybody needed anything. How sweet is that! I do believe we are so lucky to live in one of the nicest communities, here on our hill in Yamhill-Carlton.
The weather does give us a perfect excuse to hunker down here at home and play games, watch movies, and share some popcorn and laughter with the kids even with all of the extra work the cold weather is causing, keeping the chickens and livestock in feed, hay, and warm water. The vines of course are sleeping at present, though they are very festively dressed for their nap.
But the snowstorm has also caused us to change our tasting room hours. We are now closed until after the new year, though we do plan to open on Saturdays from 1-6 during the month of January. Stay tuned for February hours, which I’ll post in a few weeks. And while we’re keeping up with internet and phone orders, we won’t be shipping again until after this weather event is over (hopefully by early next week!).
