Happy 2009! The middle of winter seems like an odd time to begin a new year. I’ve always felt that the more obvious time is mid-March, just as Spring is beginning and the earth wakes up again after a long winter’s nap. Equinox seems like a more fitting time to celebrate new beginnings. But here we are, a New Year just begun, and we have a few things to talk about. Barbara Thomas Wines is now Carbon Neutral!
In Autumn, 2007, we answered Governor Kulongoski’s call to Oregon wineries to join the Carbon Neutral Challenge Initiative. We are one of 30 wineries who have chosen to participate in this partnership. Over the intervening months we have conducted an analysis of our energy usage, estimated our carbon footprint, and developed a greenhouse gas emissions mitigation and offset program. While we are continuing to look for ways to reduce our gross impact, we are excited to announce that through both mitigation and the purchase of carbon offsets, we will have a net zero carbon footprint for 2009. New Offerings!
We are also very excited to announce that for the first time this coming May, we will be adding Riesling to our wine list. We are making both an Alsatian-style (dry) riesling, and a dessert-style (sweet) riesling. Both are being vinified from fruit grown right here at Vigna Giovanni, and we are thrilled to finally be able to offer these to our customers, many of whom have been requesting them since we opened our doors.
Babies and more babies!
No, not us, but our goat herd. In the past two days, with temperatures down in the low 40s, we have had 5 babies born to 3 mamas. They are adorable, of course, and it never ceases to amaze me how beautiful and resilient life is.
Even more goat kids are expected in the coming days. Maybe this is a fitting time to celebrate new beginnings, after all!
